                                              Medical Coder is, in essence, a translator. As a part of medical team, the medical coder reviews the patient's file and translates everything from that file into universal codes by insurance companies. It's the medical coder's responsibility to make sure the right code is used every single time. It's the only way to ensure the  insurance companies are billed properly. A medical coder is different from a medical biller. A medical biller processes the insurance claims and follows up on them. They do not determine what codes are used in the insurance billing. However, A Medical Coder and a Medical biller can be the same person if they have the proper training. 

                                              The International Classification of Disease (ICD) is designed to promote international comparability in the collection, processing, classification and presentation of a patient's status. This includes providing a format for reporting a patient's health condition, diagnosis . For example ICD G91.9 denotes the Hydrocephalus. 

                                         

  Hydrocephalus is an abnormal buildup of fluid in the ventricles deep within the brain. This excess fluid causes the ventricles to widen, putting pressure on the brain's tissues. Hydrocephalus is caused by an imbalance between how much cerebrospinal fluid is produced and how much is absorbed into the bloodstream.

Usual symptoms include : 

• unusually large head
• Rapid increasing head circumference
• Bulging and tense fontanelle or soft spot
• Prominent scalp veins
• Downward deviation of eye
• Vomiting
• Sleepiness
• Irritability ...etc

Hydrocephalus is a chronic condition. It can be controlled , but usually not cured .By using a single ICD code we can get a clear image about a patient's condition.
